Marques' Almeida to show in Paris this September

Marques’ Almeida, the label from the acclaimed winning duo of the LVMH Prize, will stage its next runway show in Paris this September.

The move marks the latest coup for the Paris season, which has succeeded in attracting a whole slew of notable new international talents not based in Paris to the French runway calendar in the past few seasons.

Composed of the duo Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida, the brand Marques’ Almeida has been one of the most watched runway collections in London ever since it launched its catwalk career in April 2011 by showing during Fashion East, the noted platform for young designers organized by fashion savant Lulu Kennedy. Its Paris debut will feature its spring-summer 2019 collection.

In a certain sense, the news marks a return to Paris for the Marques’ Almeida duo, who in May 2015 won the LVMH Prize for Young Designers.

“I am extremely happy to know that my little sisters and I can continue to develop in a culture that helps people to grow better. I am excited for the future and what we can achieve, knowing that we can do whatever we want,” said the duo in a press release.

Hailed for its offbeat style, baroque influences and punk attitude, Marques’ Almeida often features real people, frequently artistic pals, and not professional models in its runway show, staged in discussed breweries or Dickensian warehouses.

A spokesman for the house underlined that Marques’ Almeida is in talks with the Federation de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, French fashion’s governing body, discussing its entrance into the official calendar, possibly to be staged on September 25, the second day of the nine-day Paris season which culminates on October 2.

After working in the creative teams of Vivienne Westwood and Preen, Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida each completed Masters at Central Saint Martins before creating their joint brand. In 2014, they were awarded NewGen sponsorship from the British Fashion Council/Topshop - support that lasted for five seasons.

In 2015, along with nabbing the LVMH Prize, fashion’s richest award for young talent, the design duo launched their debut Resort collection.
