From CamperLab to Camper. In just one year. The rise of Finnish designer Achilles Ion Gabriel within Spanish footwear group Camper, owned by the Mallorca-based Fluxá family, has been very fast. On Monday August 24, Camper has in fact officially announced Gabriel's appointment as its new creative director.

It is a further step in Camper’s design department’s evolution, following the departure in June 2019 of Romain Kremer, who had been the creative director since 2014 and led Camper’s repositioning and stylistic makeover. After Kremer left, Camper hired Gabriel, putting him in charge of the brand image of CamperLab, a sub-brand launched by Camper in 2015 for the development of its most directional models.

A little over a year later, Gabriel, who has also been running his own eponymous label since 2012, has reached the highest rung of Camper’s corporate ladder, extending his remit to oversee the product design of the Spanish brand’s entire range, starting from the Fall/Winter 2021 season.

“Camper is a family business with a well-established tradition for craftsmanship, innovation and sustainable design. We are convinced that through Achilles’s huge talent, unique vision and in-depth knowledge of Camper we will be able to evolve as a brand and strengthen our understanding of design and style,” said the CEO of Camper, Miguel Fluxà, announcing Gabriel's new appointment. Gabriel for his part has underlined his eagerness to “make the most of this opportunity and broaden my vision for [Camper].”

Camper was founded by the Fluxá family in 1975 and is based in Mallorca, Spain. It is currently sold via 2,500 multibrand retailers and 400 monobrand stores in 40 countries. The brand accounts for virtually the entire revenue of the Forch Med holding company, which closed the 2019 financial year with a revenue of €182.27 million.
