The creative, whose eponymous luxury footwear line is famous for its signature red soles, was chosen to receive the honor by the Couture Council of The Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology).

The accolade was presented at the Lincoln Center in New York City on September 4 by the actress Priyanka Chopra, according to multiple reports. The star later took to Instagram to congratulate the designer.

"To be recognized by The Museum at FIT's esteemed Couture Council is a great honor," Louboutin said in a statement published by FIT.

"While my designs have roots in Paris, I feel very lucky to have access to some of the most specialized craftsmanship in the world; that has allowed me to push my creative boundaries and celebrate inclusivity and self-empowerment through cultural exchange."

Louboutin, whose fashion and beauty empire now spans fragrance, beauty and accessories, was selected for the award by an expert panel that included the editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar Glenda Bailey and the international editor-at-large of Vogue Hamish Bowles.

In receiving the award, he follows in the footsteps of illustrious designers such as Narciso Rodriguez, Manolo Blahnik, Oscar de la Renta and Karl Lagerfeld, among others.
