Clogs, wicker bags and 70s shades are key summer trends says Stylight

A new report has shown that clogs and platform slides are the key shoes of the summer with wicker bags and retro sunglasses also riding high.

Online search platform Stylight said that there are actually seven must-have accessories for this summer, based on Google search activity.

Clogs have seen an 85% increase in clicks, with wicker bags up 88%, platform slides up 89% and 70s sunglasses rising 104%. Meanwhile utilitarian canvas bags have risen 64%, beaded bangles 99% and letter necklaces 90%.

The clog popularity is a continuation of the ‘ugly shoes’ trend seen with Birkenstocks last year, Stylight said. It’s partly being driven by clogs being seen in collections from Gucci, Celine, and Louis Vuitton.

And the same ugly shoes trend is driving interest in platform slides, especially by Yeezy. Celebrity endorsement from big names such as Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner have helped here.

Wicker bags, meanwhile, are appearing in a wide variety of styles and sizes from mini, cross-body, and handbags.

Canvas bags, which almost seem like one step up from carrier bags, also seem to be appealing due to their carry-all functionality. These almost-plain fabric bags are aided in their must-have status either by an aspirational designer name or some kind of statement.

Retro-inspired 70s sunglasses also have a celebrity link with the in-your-face styles made famous by Cher, Farrah Fawcett and Bianca Jagger all striking a chord. With thick frames and arms, they come in solid black, bold colours or classic tortoiseshell.

As for jewellery, beaded bangles — bracelets and hoops with colourful Rocailles beads — are proving popular. They sum up the summer and perhaps suggest to consumers the holidays that not many of them will be able to take this year.

And letter necklaces are another revival trend, one that’s being embraced by the mass-market. Stylight said that Zara has this year dedicated a section to monogram products and other such moves from rivals have helped interest in such products almost double.
