On December 21, House of Fraser finally opened its first store in China, marking the UK department store's retail expansion in the Asian nation under new Chinese ownership.

A UK and Ireland's premium department store group, House of Fraser's debut China store is located in Nanjing at Xinjiekou Sanpower Plaza (the International Financial Centre) and covers a total retail area of approximately 28,500 square metres over six floors.

The new building boasts a neoclassical style, which is decorated with a British style clock installation, Fraser's glass roof, and a world class light show. Additionally, there are around 50 video screens in the store.

The store provides customers with over 300 brands as well as a VIP lounge, and VIP loyalty, and personal shopping. The world's biggest toy chain Hamleys and the American novelty retail corporation Brookstone are adjacent to the store.

The opening of the store also marks the introduction of a number of new brands to the Chinese market, who are partnering with House of Fraser. In addition, new concepts such as Style by HoF, and a Nike Beacon store, the largest Nike beacon store in China, form part of the building, as well as Monceau, a lifestyle store and cafe.

'This is an exciting time for House of Fraser and the opening of the store in Nanjing is a strong way to finish 2016," said Frank Slevin, chairman, House of Fraser UK.

"We are confident that our first store will clearly demonstrate the unique status that House of Fraser can achieve in the market, and will be a standout platform for our brand partners".

House of Fraser completed its sale to Nanjing Xinjiekou Department Store, a Chinese department store chain owned by the Sanpower Group, back in September 2014. House of Fraser's Chinese market entry has been a long time coming, with the new Chinese owners insistent of getting the department store's brand and aesthetic in the Asian market, just right.

"We wanted to ensure we replicated the store designs and environment I have come cross whilst visiting some of the brand's most unique stores, and providing customers with a unique premium shopping experience with a strong sense of British tradition," said Yuan Yafei, chairman of Sanpower Group.

"We are proud of the store as we believe it clearly epitomises our strategy for House of Fraser to become a leading global brand".
