The McArthurGlen Group has appointed Simon Johnston as deputy chairman, a newly-created position. The lawyer, who was previously senior partner at London law firm Nabarro LLP, was the discount retailer’s key legal advisor for the investments in the UK and abroad.

Johnston started working with the company in the early stages in 1993. Their relationship continued to develop from then on.

“Simon’s professional experience and wisdom, and his long relationship with our company, will be pivotal in leading McArthurGlen into a new period of growth; this is in terms of not only the amount of retail space that we operate, and the number of centres, but also the McArthurGlen brand itself and the quality of the shopping experience that we offer our nearly 100 million customers annually,” said the group’s president, J W Kaempfer Jr.

Simon Johnston will work at the McArthurGlen headquarters in London. The group currently has 21 sites across Europe and is preparing the opening of its first North American location in Vancouver in 2014.
