Eco-conscious consumerism is on the rise in the UK, and that’s not all good news for some retailers. While 77% of consumers admitted they are making more sustainable fashion choices, Britons are now finding alternatives to shopping on the high street, according to new research from fabric dyeing company Dylon Dyes.

Instead, consumers are buying from charity shops (28%), buying from online marketplaces and communities (15%) or buying from car boot sales (9%). Meanwhile, 17% are also upcycling their clothes and “reinventing their own fashion”.

Positively, 49% are changing their end-of-clothing-life habits by donating items to charity, repairing (29%), or giving them away to family and friends (23%).

In the wake of the cost-of-living crisis, 47% admit to being more sustainable to save money, 45% to help reduce waste and 21% to tackle climate change. Additionally, the research cites that TV has influenced 22% in their decision to become more sustainable.

Also, 33% of respondents say they are now more sustainable with their clothing habits compared to five years ago. Some 23% of those are buying from more charity shops or car boot sales while 16% have started selling more clothes.
