Peter Pilotto unveils menswear in a technicolor show
Milan Fashion Week got down to business on Wednesday with a much-anticipated show from Peter Pilotto. The British women's ready-to-wear brand, which usually shows in London, decided to head to the Lombard capital this season in order to gain better visibility with the international press and overseas buyers, opting to host its runway presentation in one of the dark corridors of the old Cinema Manzoni. The label also took advantage of the event to launch a new line of leather goods and unveil its first ever menswear looks.
"These first looks are a test. The idea is to develop a fresher, more fun spirit in our menswear that will then spread to our womenswear, which has a more sophisticated style," explained Maia Guarnaccia, who was appointed as brand's first CEO at the beginning of this year.
In satin two-tone sandals, bucket hats and necklaces with sparkling stones, the gents went for a nonchalant look, sporting silk pyjamas, soft terry cloth robes featuring pastel patterns, colorful short-sleeved shirts, tie-dye shirt and pant combos, and suits in damask or floral silk.
Some fabrics and patterns were repurposed for womenswear looks. A mauve and sky-blue Lurex was used for a polo shirt for men and a dress for women, while men's powder-pink silk pyjamas were transformed into a slinky shirt-dress for the ladies. Elsewhere, a yellow and orange knitted jumper was extended into a cardigan-dress, ideal for warm summer evenings.
The collection was an explosion of colors and patterns, playing with a broad palette that ranged from sun-bleached tones to sparkling shades ready for a night out on the tiles. The women on the runway paired crop and tube tops with maxi-skirts that floated around their legs or terry cloth towels tied at the waist. Designers Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos like to drape their models in flamboyant materials and this latest show was no exception. Here they wrapped them in shining satin in saturated shades of apple green, turquoise and orange, and sent them down the runway on crystal-encrusted stilettos.
"The aim is to expand the Peter Pilotto brand. I started by focusing on e-commerce, which is experiencing strong growth. We've also diversified our offer with this first handbag line, produced in collaboration with Montecristo, the Italian company owned by Riccardo Braccialini," Guarnaccia pointed out.
Featuring a variety of tangy candy colors, the brand's geometric micro-bags dangled from golden chains, sometimes doubled up, one on top of the other, or were worn in pairs at the waist, looking like two portholes or eyes staring out at the audience.
