Work starts on Bond Street upgrade as area prepares for 60 million more visits

Public works may not be the most exciting fashion subject, but with a £10m investment in London’s Bond Street being the most ambitious such scheme there in over 30 years, it takes on a whole new dimension.

Bond Street will benefit from its biggest major spend in over 30 years

In the last 30 years, the street has moved from being one focused on multiple small and mid-sized luxury stores to being the home of giant global luxury flagships from some of the biggest names in the sector. But constant building works and features like cracked paving do make it feel like a less-than-luxury experience to walk down it.

The new scheme will complete by the end of next year in time for the opening of the new Elizabeth tube train line that is expected to generate an extra 60 million visits to London’s West End each year.

The project aims to significantly enhance the experience for pedestrians, while still allowing traffic on the street. Footpaths will be widened and upgraded with the introduction of York stone, green granite and silver granite paving to replace the ‘patchwork’ carriageway and cracked footway paving. These improvements will be mirrored across the carriageway and footpaths of the entire stretch of New and Old Bond Street.

The area between Burlington Gardens and Bruton Street will also undergo a transformation during the next phase of this project and will include a new paving layout “to create a more intimate and pedestrian friendly space.”

The ‘Allies Sculpture’ featuring Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, one of London’s must-see tourist stops, will also be restored.
